PTA budgets do not stretch to a designer, so the job usually lands on a parent. In Westbury, New York, that parent is Ren Zelaya, a PTA dad of 20 years and past president of the Westbury High School PTSA. Prom, graduation, safety notices, member drives, the annual Spooky Walk: every one of them needs a graphic, and every one of them is packed with photos of kids and families the community wants to see. Ren has made all of it himself since 2017.
He works fast because he never starts over. Someone asks for a book fair flyer and it used to eat an hour. Now it takes 15 minutes. For repeat events he opens last year's design, duplicates it, and swaps the date and details.
